Dewey Lives! David Arquette Returns to ‘Scream 7’

How?! Arquette, Foley & Lillard’s Mysterious ‘Scream 7’ Comeback Revealed. Spyglass and Paramount Pictures are teasing a mind-bending twist as David Arquette joins Scott Foley and Matthew Lillard in a seemingly impossible return from the dead for ‘Scream 7’.

Resurrected from the franchise’s graveyard, the trio’s return remains shrouded in enigma. How these seemingly departed characters will reappear is a mystery locked tighter than Ghostface’s secrets, with plot details fiercely guarded by Spyglass and Paramount.

Deputy Dewey Riley, a character synonymous with the ‘Scream’ legacy, is returning after his shocking demise in ‘Scream 5’ at the hands of Amber Freeman (Mikey Madison). Arquette’s portrayal of the well-meaning but often hapless deputy, first seen in the 1996 original as Tatum Riley’s (Rose McGowan) brother, resonated deeply with fans. The original Woodsboro Murders, which claimed Tatum’s life and were committed by Skeet Ulrich and Matthew Lillard, became a defining trauma for Dewey, influencing his every move throughout the series.

Dewey’s return connects him to Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox), his ex-wife, also returning for ‘Scream 7’. He notably killed Roman Bridger (Scott Foley), Sydney Prescott’s (Neve Campbell) half-brother, in ‘Scream 3’ (2000).

Arquette will also join the previously announced legacy cast members Campbell, Mason Gooding and Jasmin Savoy Brown, alongside newcomers Isabel May, Celeste O’Connor, Asa Germann, Mckenna Grace, Sam Rechner, Anna Camp, Joel McHale, Mark Consuelos and Ethan Embry.

The long-running horror franchise has four films, including Scream (1996), Scream 2 (1997), Scream 3 (2000), and Scream 4 (2011), directed by the late Wes Craven. It relaunched with the fifth installment, Scream, in 2022.

The latest outing, Scream VI, was released theatrically worldwide in March 2023 and holds the franchise record for highest domestic box office gross, with more than $108 million domestically and over $169 million worldwide. Collectively, the Scream franchise has earned more than $900 million in worldwide box office receipts.
