MonsterVerse Expands: Matthew Modine Cast in ‘GODZILLA X KONG’ Sequel

Written by

Legendary has confirmed that Matthew Modine will join the cast of the next theatrical feature in its Monsterverse franchise, directed by Grant Sputore.

The Stranger Things and Married to the Mob actor will join Dan Stevens, reprising his role as Trapper, along with Kaitlyn Dever, Jack O’Connell, and Delroy Lindo. The latest draft was penned by Dave Callaham. The sequel will introduce several new human characters who will join Godzilla and Kong in confronting a cataclysmic, world-ending threat.

Legendary’s Monsterverse, now a decade old, is a cross-platform story universe that focuses on humanity’s struggle to survive in a world where the monsters of our myths and legends are real. Last year’s Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire became the highest-grossing installment in the Monsterverse, earning $571.8 million at the worldwide box office.

In addition to the Warner Bros. distributed films—2014’s Godzilla, 2017’s Kong: Skull Island, 2019’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters, 2021’s Godzilla vs. Kong, and last year’s Godzilla x Kong—the Monsterverse has grossed over $2.5 billion at the global box office. The franchise also includes the Apple TV+ series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, as well as a connected world of video games, graphic novels, toys, and live experiences.

Matthew Modine’s impressive credits include Christopher Nolan’s Oscar-winning Oppenheimer, Hard Miles, Miss Virginia, and The Martini Shot. He currently stars alongside Robert De Niro in the Netflix original series Zero Day. Upcoming projects for Modine include the Amazon original series The Better Sister, with Elizabeth Banks and Jessica Biel, and The Protector, featuring Milla Jovovich.
