Biography

Anthony Mackie, who was classically trained at the Juilliard School of Drama, is a great and talented actor who is able to capture a plethora of characters.

Mackie is a member of the Marvel Cinematic Universe family. He made his Marvel debut as Sam Wilson/The Falcon in “Captain America: The Winter Soldier.” Mackie’s Falcon appeared in “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” as well as “Ant-Man” and “Captain America: Civil War,” the third installment in the Captain America franchise, and also appeared in “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame.” Most recently, he starred opposite Sebastian Stan in the Marvel Studios series “The Falcon and The Winter Soldier.”

Mackie recently wrapped production on “Desert Warrior,” produced by Jeremy Bolt. Mackie stars with Aiysha Hart, Sharlto Copley, Ghassan Massoud, Sami Bouajila, Lamis Ammar, Géza Röhrig and Sir Ben Kingsley in this feature set in 7th-century Arabia.

Mackie was most recently seen in Peacock’s “Twisted Metal,” in which he stars and serves as an executive producer. He stars opposite Stephanie Beatriz, Thomas Haden Church and Will Arnett. The series was released on July 27, 2023, and has been renewed for a second season.

Mackie will be making his directorial debut with the film “Spark,” starring Saniyya Sidney. The film will tell the often-forgotten story of Claudette Colvin, a pioneer of the civil rights movement at just 15 years old.

Mackie is also set to star in John Lee Hancock’s new legal drama feature “Monsanto” opposite Glen Powell and Laura Dern. The drama was acquired by Netflix at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival. He will also star in and executive produce AppleTV+’s new contemporary international heist series “12 12 12” opposite Jamie Dornan.

In 2023 Mackie starred in the Netflix film “We Have a Ghost,” directed by Christopher Landon. Mackie starred opposite David Harbour, Tig Notaro and Jennifer Coolidge in this ghost family adventure, which was released on February 24, 2023. Also in 2023, Mackie starred in “If You Were the Last,” opposite Zoë Chao, Natalie Morales and Geoff Stults. The film premiered at SXSW on March 11, 2023.

In 2021 Mackie starred in and co-produced Netflix’s action sci-fi film “Outside the Wire” and starred in Amazon’s anthology series “Solos” and Netflix’s crime drama “The Woman in the Window” with Julianne Moore and Amy Adams.

In 2020 Mackie starred in the second season of the Netflix series “Altered Carbon”; Apple TV+’s “The Banker,” alongside Samuel L. Jackson and Nicholas Hoult, which he starred in and produced; “Seberg,” opposite Kristen Stewart; and “Synchronic” opposite Jamie Dornan.

In 2019 Mackie was featured in Sony’s “Miss Bala” alongside Gina Rodriguez; Netflix’s “IO” opposite Margaret Qualley; Marvel Studios’ “Avengers: Endgame,” where he reprised his role as Sam Wilson/Falcon; and Netflix’s hit series “Black Mirror,” where he starred in the “Striking Vipers” episode. He also starred in the streamer’s action thriller “Point Blank” alongside Frank Grillo.

In 2018 Mackie was seen in Fox’s critically acclaimed film “The Hate U Give,” based on the best-selling novel by Angie Thomas.

Mackie earned IFP Spirit and Gotham Award nominations for his performance in Rodney Evans’ “Brother to Brother,” which won the 2004 special dramatic jury prize at the Sundance Film Festival and best first feature at the Independent Spirit Awards.

Mackie’s early credits include his feature film debut as Eminem’s nemesis, Papa Doc, in Curtis Hanson’s “8 Mile”; and Spike Lee’s “Sucker Free City” and “She Hate Me.” He also appeared in Clint Eastwood’s Academy Award®– winning “Million Dollar Baby”; Jonathan Demme’s “The Manchurian Candidate”; and the comedy “The Man,” starring Samuel L. Jackson.

Intertwined throughout his film career, Mackie was seen in several theatrical performances both on and off- Broadway. Mackie made his Broadway debut as the stuttering nephew, Sylvester, alongside Whoopi Goldberg in August Wilson’s “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.” Next he was seen as the lead in Regina Taylor’s modern retelling of Chekhov’s “The Seagull,” starred in Stephen Belber’s “McReele” for the Roundabout Theatre Company and starred in the Pulitzer Prize–winning play “Soldier’s Play” as a character made famous by Denzel Washington 20 years prior. In 2010 Mackie returned to Broadway, starring in Martin McDonagh’s “A Behanding in Spokane.”

Mackie was part of the production of “August Wilson’s 20th Century” at the esteemed Kennedy Center, which included staged readings of all 10 plays in August Wilson’s cycle. Mackie participated in three of the 10 shows and hopes to return to the stage soon.
